1) AME CONSULTATION - Strongly consider an AME Consultation before your exam if you have or have had any medical conditions. New FAA policies are likely to delay your certification if you are not properly prepared.
2) MEDXPRESS - A MedXPress application is a mandatory pre-requisite to the medical exam. Read below for more information.
3) COLOR VISION - Color vision testing changed dramatically in 2025. See the next section over and be prepared!
FAA MedXPress Application is
MANDATORY
You are applying to the FAA for medical certification.
If you bring us your FAA application, we are authorized to perform the FAA’s exam. But without an application, there is nothing we can do.
You are responsible for and required to complete the FAA MedXPress application each time you apply for medical certification / recertification. You must bring the printed summary or your confirmation number with you to your appointment. If you do not have this completed when you show up for your appointment:
Your appointment will be cancelled and you will be charged the cancellation fee.

For AME (Aviation Medical Examiner) Appointments
1. MedXPress Application: You must complete your FAA MedXPress application before your medical exam. Use your full legal name that matches your other government IDs to avoid delays. If you don't have this done, we will have to cancel your appointment and you will be charged the cancellation fee.
Complete it here: MedXPress.FAA.gov
2. Required Items: Please bring the following to your appointment:
- A government-issued photo ID
- Your MedXPress confirmation number
- Your eyeglasses or contact lenses, if you wear them
- Any FAA letters or required documents
- Also drink some fluids so you can provide a urine sample.
3. Location: We have multiple locations. Please double-check to ensure you go to the correct office.
4. Color Vision Testing: First-time applicants are required to have color vision testing. This is not included in the standard exam but can be added at the time of your appointment for an additional $150. You do not need a separate appointment.
5. Special Issuance: If you have an Authorization for Special Issuance (ASI), it is your responsibility to bring the authorization letter and all required reports to your exam. The FAA requires that you have these documents. If you don't, your case will be deferred to the FAA for review, which can cause significant delays.

Are you interested in becoming an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)???
That’s great!
Any state licensed physician may apply to the FAA to become an AME. If the FAA determines there is a need and they approve of your application they will authorize basic training (usually a 4-5 day course in Oklahoma City). At that training some of what they teach you are their medical standards, what conditions need to be deferred to the FAA, items required to be accomplished during an exam, and what medical equipment you are required to have. But then you are on your own. This leads to individual physicians each “re-inventing the wheel” and starting from scratch. It also leads to great diversity in practices (some are quite professional and modern whereas others are pretty bare and outdated) and results.
At Texas AME (United AME), we are a consortium of independent Providers who all work together under an Office Sharing Agreement. The Practice provides a “turn key” solution and everything needed to jump right in and start seeing pilot applicants! From modern offices with current equipment, to professional scheduling, merchant processing, and an established online presence, it couldn’t be easier! As a Provider, you get to focus on the aspects you enjoy while leaning on the expertise and experience of the Practice to handle the rest.
We’re always on the lookout for new Providers (and new Locations!) who want to be a part of advancing the practice of being an Aviation Medical Examiner. If you have aspirations and/or a location in mind, let us know and we can probably help make it a reality!
